I had a blind wine tasting party this past weekend. We invited 6 other couples over and asked each couple to bring their favorite bottle of red, and their favorite bottle of white, under $20. The goal was to not take wine tasting too seriously, but also to taste some new inexpensive wines which would be great for those weeknight dinners. Who wants to spend $35 on a bottle of wine just to have one glass of wine with dinner? We kept it simple and just asked people to rate the wines 1-5. If it was a more specific tasting, like only reds or only say, Merlot, then I think I’d get a little more into aroma, clarity, etc. But this was just supposed to be casual and fun and with wines under $20, you can’t get too serious about the other stuff. Surprisingly, the winner in the red category, and the winner in the white category, were both $10 bottles of wine. Go figure!
Of course, I had some nibbles for people to munch on during the tasting. What was on the menu? Roasted shrimp with two dipping sauces (a cocktail sauce and a cognac dill sauce), marinated olives (as well as the oil for dipping), roasted eggplant dip, white bean dip, crostini with goat cheese/walnuts/rosemary honey, and tomato mozzarella skewers wrapped in prosciutto. A friend was also kind enough to bring some delicious cheese and two kinds of phyllo cups (one mushroom, one sweet potato). Dessert was mini chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and coconut, and mini donut muffins (both inspired from episodes of The Best Thing I Ever Ate on the Food Network). I also made strawberry lemonade for a non-alcoholic option and homemade dog treats for the dogs that were visiting with their owners. Most of the dishes could, and should, be made ahead, which makes for easy entertaining. Only two of them really needed to be assembled in the hour before the party. While the tasting was fun, the best part was spending time with good friends. It’s always been my firm belief that food brings people together. Whether that is true in this case or not, I’m sticking with my beliefs. Recipes to come in the following posts.
